Painting in Carinthia and Tyrol from 1900 - 1960
In the special exhibition of 2019, the Museum of the City of Lienz dedicates itself to the art of modernity from the regions of Carinthia and Tyrol. Building on the presentation of the Albin Egger-Lienz collection, over 70 selected works - from Artur Nikodem to Kiki Kogelnik, from Anton Kolig and Herbert Boeckl to Max Weiler - provide a glimpse into painting from 1900 to 1960.
The fact that an exhibition on modern painting from Carinthia and Tyrol is being held at Schloss Bruck in Lienz is obvious due to the geographical and political location of East Tyrol. As a border region between the regions, the district of Lienz shares a common cultural space with Carinthia and the rest of Tyrol. The painting of the first half of the 20th century from both Austrian states is now brought together for the first time in an exhibition for joint consideration.
Initially, the connecting element becomes clear: Artists from Tyrol and Carinthia found the most influential inspirations and connections to international modernity at the beginning of the 20th century in the places of their education. These were primarily Vienna and Munich. These were also the major cities where social modernization had progressed most rapidly. Modernity and urbanity were considered synonymous. Although the cultural and social change occurred with a time delay away from bustling metropolises, it was the individual achievements of these artists that attempted to establish modernity in rural areas in the first half of the 20th century. Upon their return from studies in the major cities, they continued to work in predominantly conservative milieus and sought to mediate between new art and traditional, regional culture there. Despite often adverse circumstances, their work in the social fabric of the region remains a sustainable cultural factor to this day. waren es doch die Einzelleistungen dieser KünstlerInnen, die in der ersten Hälfte des 20.
