2007: SEARCH FOR TRACES³ Part III - Periphery in Transition

12.05. – 28.10.2007

East Tyrol – 1850 to the Present with the "Tower of Remembrance"

The third and final part of our search for traces begins with the gradual naturalization of the term "East Tyrol" for the eastern Puster Valley from 1850 onwards. The political "District of Lienz" is created through the reorganization of Tyrol in 1868, the "opening to the big world" is achieved by the start of the Puster Valley Railway in 1871.

The most significant cut is the cession of South Tyrol to Italy in 1919/20, which further strengthens the peripheral location of East Tyrol. A special development is the "quick annexation" as "District of Lienz" to the NS "Gau Carinthia" from 1938 to 1945 with the "return" to Tyrol only in 1947. The breakthrough of the periphery to the north is achieved by the construction of the Felbertauern Road from 1962 to 1967.

At the end of the long paralyzing conflict over the Dorfertal power plant, the "No" to the energy industry and the "Yes" to the creation of the (East) Tyrolean part of the Hohe Tauern National Park stands in 1989/91.

With the elimination of controls in passenger traffic in the Puster Valley through the EU Schengen Agreement from 1998, the spread of the internet, and significantly increased mobility

the factor "peripheral location" has been losing importance in recent times.

Tower of Remembrance

Personal memory objects of the East Tyrolean population are presented - accompanied by emotional stories - as a complement to the main exhibition in the keep of Bruck Castle.
