2008: GUIZHOU - China"s Realm of Sounds and Colors

May 17 - October 26, 2008

Ethnic Groups in the Chinese Province of Guizhou

Guizhou Province is located in the southwest of the People"s Republic of China in a subtropical humid mountainous region at over 1000m above sea level. Due to its geographical location, Guizhou was long inaccessible to the outside world and is among the poorer regions of China. Today, approximately 38 million people live in Guizhou, 37% of whom belong to one of fifteen ethnic groups. Each of these nationalities, such as the Dong, Miao, Gelao, Yao, Buyi, or Shui, has its own language, religious beliefs, and customs preserved to this day.Preserved. Whether brightly colored embroideries, symbolic silver jewelry, sacred paintings, or traditional singing and theater - for the first time, evidence of this culturally diverse heritage that has grown over millennia can be seen outside of China!

About 300 objects from the collection of Prof. Liu Yong, a member of the Buyi nationality, provide insight into the diversity of a remote Chinese province, which is currently undergoing rapid economic changes in the People"s Republic of China and must defend its traditional values.
